Two earthquakes rattled Edmond, Oklahoma Friday morning, measuring 2.9 and 2.8 magnitude and hitting minutes apart just after 4 a.m.

This comes just more than a year after several earthquake swarms in 2024 shook central Oklahoma and even did extensive damage to homes. Below is a timeline looking at those events and the actions taken by the state in the weeks and months that followed.

On Jan. 12 and 13, 2024, at least four earthquakes were felt in the Edmond and Arcadia areas, measuring between 2.7 and 4.4 on the Richter scale.

The city of Edmond responded with a statement saying its infrastructure is built to withstand seismic activity.

The mid-January swarm in the Edmond area continued later into the next day. No major damage was reported.

Aftershocks continued in the Edmond area as late as May 2024. A 3.5 magnitude quake hit just northeast of town. That was followed by a 2.7-magnitude quake days later, and a 2.8-magnitude earthquake after that.

On Feb. 2, 2024, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake centered near Prague, Oklahoma, shook the entire state.

The state responded by shutting down disposal wells in response to the 5.1 magnitude earthquake.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission said oil and gas wastewater disposal in the Lincoln County area where the quake hit was linked to seismic activity in the state. Officials said a gradual shutdown would avoid sudden pressure changes that would lead to more quakes.
